What Is A513 Steel Mechanical Tubing?

A513 is an ASTM specification for electric-resistance-welded carbon steel mechanical tubing. It is designed for mechanical and non-pressure-bearing applications rather than piping or pressure service. A513 mechanical tubing is available in both hot-rolled electric-welded and cold-rolled electric-welded forms for a wide range of tolerance and surface finish requirements.

A513 Carbon Steel Square Tube Specifications

Totten Tubes stocks A513 carbon steel square tubing in both HREW and CREW forms, including A513-1 HREW, A513-2 CREW, combination HREW/CREW, and A513 Black Kote options. Tubing is available in a wide range of sizes, with standard mill lengths and cut-to-length services available.

Square tubing sizes typically range from approximately 3/8" x 3/8" through 20" x 20", depending on wall thickness and specification. Lengths are available in 20-foot and 24-foot sections, with custom cuts available upon request. For more information, view our in-depth A500 Steel and A513 Carbon Steel Tube specifications.

Hot-Rolled Electric-Welded (HREW) Square Tubing

A513-1 HREW square tubing offers solid mechanical strength and uniform wall thickness. It is commonly selected for fabricated components and general mechanical applications where surface finish is not the primary concern.

Cold-Rolled Electric-Welded (CREW) Square Tubing

A513-2 CREW square tubing provides tighter dimensional tolerances and a smoother surface finish. This material is often used for applications that require a more precise finish.

Advantages of Mechanical A513 ASTM Carbon Steel Square Tube

Compared to other steel tubing types, A513 ASTM steel tubing offers the uniformity and tensile strength needed for a wide variety of non-load-bearing applications. Mechanical A513 carbon steel advantages include:
  • Meets ASTM industry standards
  • Pliable and easy to bend
  • Can adhere to tight tolerances versus other alloys
  • Does not require stenciling
A513-1 HREW mechanical tubing allows for stringent tolerances versus other tubing options. A513-2 CREW tubing is ideal for applications where polishing is required.

Common Industrial Applications for A513 Steel Square Tubing

Uses for A513 square tubing often depend on the application requirements for hot-rolled or cold-rolled ASTM A513 tubing. Due to its non-load-bearing nature, A513 square tubing is an excellent choice for mechanical applications in a variety of industries, including automotive, construction, energy, machinery, and more. General uses include:
  • Machine components
  • Fencing
  • Exercise equipment
  • Furniture
  • Storage racks
  • Bicycles
  • Appliances
  • Recreational equipment

Mechanical vs. Structural Square Tubing: A513 vs. A500

ASTM A513 square tubing is produced for mechanical, non-load-bearing applications that benefit from tight tolerances and consistent dimensions. ASTM A500 square tubing is classified as structural tubing and is intended for load-bearing structural uses. Projects that require dimensional precision often favor A513, while structural frameworks rely on A500.
